Reverse-Painted Mural Will be “Ecstasy” at ArtSplash
Each year, charter ArtSplash artists, Ron Juncal, Phyllis Swanson and the
Studio 2 Team create a dazzling work predominating as that annual event’s
destination art. The 2007 welcoming mural, embellished with live flower
petals, was fashioned to be colorfully enticing “in” to the Armada Drive
event.
At ArtSplash 2008, diving into Carlsbad the weekend of September 20-21,
the team will paint itself “out” of the picture, literally. The artists
will recreate the Maxfield Parrish painting, “Ecstasy,” on the middle
panel of a three-panel mural that totals 15 feet in length and eight feet
in height.
Explaining the painting selection, Juncal notes, “Parrish was an early
20th century illustrator renowned for his use of light and color.” In
1925, nearly one out of every five American homes had a Parrish print on
the wall. He remains the most reproduced artist in the world.
The ArtSplash mural defies imitation reproduction. “While ArtSplash
visitors watch, we will work from behind on clear acrylic panels,” Juncal
explains, “painting what would have been the last strokes first and the
first strokes last.”
Acknowledging the difficulty of the challenge, Juncal nevertheless
promises, “We artists will paint ourselves out of the picture before your
very eyes!”

Family Art Carnival Carousels Into ArtSplash
There won’t be a ferris
wheel or roller coaster at ArtSplash, diving into Carlsbad the weekend of
September 20-21, but there will be a dizzying carousel of nonstop
creativity at the event’s Family Art Carnival on Armada Drive. Children
and their parents can enjoy free arts demonstrations and get inspired by
expert techniques revealed by professional visual and performing artists
while purchasing reasonably priced tickets for an array of activities.
Origami artist Arnold Tubis will show event-goers how to fold paper
into magical stars and animals. Judi Peshek will share her secrets on
creating mixed-media musical maracas. Young Rembrandts’ Sarah Yasukochi
will present drawing lessons. High school visual artists will guide
participants in hat-making and mask-making artistry.
As in the past, families can purchase a 2’X2’ chalk art square for just
$5 each. The cost includes colored chalk, a space of pavement and
assistance from arts volunteers on drawing and blending.

This Cheese Stands Alone
Over the years, the free, fun ArtSplash
festival has evolved, beginning with chalk art paintings on the street and
expanding to include such artistic endeavors as sand-sculpting,
rock-stacking, hat-making and a flower petal mural.
When ArtSplash 2008 dives into Carlsbad the weekend of September 20-21,
the event will turn cheese-y, in a big “whey.” The “Big Cheese” himself,
Carlsbad’s longtime Mayor, Bud Lewis, will be enshrined as a work of art
with a bust carved out of milk cheddar by artist Sarah Nep. He will join
the ranks of other political big cheeses created by Nep, including former
President Bill Clinton, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown and
current California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Working from photos and sketches, Nep will carve the bust of Mayor Lewis
right on the street as ArtSplash visitors watch. Nep is one of only six
cheese sculptors in the U.S. She likens her art to ice sculpture, noting
one advantage: “There’s no puddle at the end.”
How does Sarah Nep get her subjects to smile for their cheddar sculpture? Rumor has it she tells them, “Say cheese!”
